All, Jordan's new head football coach David (Dave) Nurnberg has a football kick off banquet planned for Saturday July 25th. The location will be the Jordan High School Cafeteria and will start at 6:30pm there will be a guest speaker and catered meal. Happy 4th of July!!!!!! Hope you all have a great weekend celebrating our nation's holiday. Around 4o years ago a group called "Up with People" performed a song titled "Freedom Isn't Free." The words were inspirational and educational. One of the lines went, "Freedom isn't free; you've got to pay the price; you've got to sacrifice for your liberty!" The founders of our country did just that!! VERY INTERSTING Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid. Remember: freedom is never free! I hope you will show your support by sending this to as many people as you can, please. It's time we get the word out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games. . ________________________________________

On July 4th two founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, days and weeks later it was signed by the rest. OK. You know that you can make a right hand turn on red. Right? But, did you know that you can't make a right hand turn on a red arrow? Yep! 400 warnings were handed out recently. In fact, someone who eluded authorities for nearly three decades for conspiracy to distribute cocaine, turned right on a red arrow last week and was pulled over. The error of his ways caught up with him with a red arrow.

Monday, June 29, 2009 8:42 PM, CDT Daune weighed 103 lbs today on our home scales. It's hard for me to believe she has lost any weight because she has really been eating good. It could be the difference in the scales. She will see the wound doctor again Wednesday but the hospice R.N. said the wound already looked better to her. Daune still has her great attitude and we couldn't be happier about that. Thanks for all your prayers!! Gene

Monday, June 29, 2009 7:13 PM, EDT Family & Friends, I am thrilled to report that today was Pam's last radiation treatment!!! Yea!!! I did speak with Pam for a few minutes this afternoon. She expressed to me that she is very glad to be finished with the radiation treatments. It was tiring for her to have to prepare, get dressed and leave the house each afternoon for her appointment. Pam told me that she was going out to dinner tonight to celebrate with Ken and her friend, Joanie and her family. She thought she would probably get seafood. She told me that the seafood was very good down there. We all know it's her favorite. :-) Backtracking a little...Pam and Ken did go out to a movie and to dinner last Saturday. I'm sure they enjoyed their day. Also, last week Pam helped her neighbor prepare for a garage sale by helping to price items. I know she enjoyed visiting with her neighbors as they were working together. Allen, Wendy and Danielle are coming this Thursday for a visit. Allen will have to go back home to work after the weekend, but Wendy and Danielle will stay a few days longer. I know Nana and Pops are looking forward to spoiling that sweet Danielle!! The next doctor's visit with the internal oncologist will be July 2nd. At that time he will tell them the next steps in treatment. Pam continues to take the oral chemo. We are so thankful Pam was so well during her radiation treatments. She continued to improve mentally and physically during that time when many people do not. What a wonderful answer to prayer! God is so faithful to hear our prayers and is blessing our Pam!! Thank you, Father! Let's pray that Pam will continue to improve mentally and physically and that her stamina and energy level will improve now that radiation is over. An early heads' up...Pam's birthday is July 22nd. Mark Goodwin 1979 My name is Mark Goodwin I'm a 1979 graduate of Jordan and the Chairman of the Board of its alumni association. The alumni association was reformed last summer to help out duing the 100th football meeting between Jordan and Columbus. We have grown in numbers ever since and have done great things for our school. Who is David Nurnberg? -------------------- Subject: Jordan Hires Nurnberg as New Football Coach David Nurnberg, a former Columbus High quarterback and the current offensive coordinator at Troup, is the new football coach at Jordan. The 27-year-old replaces interim coach Gerald Turner, who stepped into the position after Tony Graziano’s resignation a few weeks prior to the beginning of the 2008 school year. Turner will concentrate on his role as basketball coach and athletic director. He describes Nurnberg as an “offensive specialist.” “I recommended him. He’s a young buck,” said Turner. “He has a lot of energy, that’s one thing he has, and he’s knowledgeable about the game. What I was looking for is someone to come in and exhibit that kind of energy. What it comes down to is we need someone that is going to be consistent and persistent with our kids. He fit the mold as to what we were looking for.” Nurnberg, who could not be reached Thursday for a telephone interview, is expected to run his version of the spread offense. Several local high schools used a version of the offense during the 2008 football season including Central-Phenix City, Carver and Hardaway. Turner said Nurnberg has coaching experience from the Jacksonville, Fla., area in addition to his time at Troup. His charge is to revive a Red Jackets football program that went 2-8 in 2008 and has not had a winning football season since 1993 when Randy Bishop coached Jordan to a 7-4 record. That was 18 years after the last previous winning season in 1975. The alumni association has been involved trying to get the cupola repaired at Jordan. Tommy McCullough, a graduate of Jordan and a member of the alumni association, connected with the right person at the Muscogee County School Board of Education and got the ball rolling on our JVHS cupola being repaired. At this time, there are bids being taken. Thanks to Tommy’s involvement he saved the alumni association and classmates from incurring the cost. Classmates and the alumni association may now focus on other needs for Jordan. As part of the efforts to further revive the JVHS football program, Coach David Nurnberg (new head football coach) made a phone call to Wayne Weaver, a Jordan alum, and the owner of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. Coach Nurnberg invited Mr. Weaver to speak at the upcoming football banquet. Mr. Weaver was unable to attend the banquet because of his busy schedule with the upcoming season. However, he decided to make a small donation of $5000.00 toward the football program. Wow! One phone call made a difference to Jordan and the football team!

Monday, June 22, 2009 11:44 PM, CDT Daune went back to the radiation doctor Wednesday June 17th. She weighed 104 lbs which is the most she has weighed in a while. The radiation doctor sent her to a wound doctor to check her open wound. The wound doctor said he could help the wound heal faster. That is important because Daune has an appointment at UAB Hospital August 10th and the wound must heal before they can start chemo. Daune continues to have a great attitude which is the most important thing. Please continue to keep Daune in your prayers. Gene

Monday, June 22, 2009 5:52 PM, EDT This is the most recent post on behalf of Pam's family. Family & Friends, I have just spoken with Ken and would like to share a few more details. Ken and Pam had a great weekend enjoying Allen, Wendy, Ashley and Danielle. Pam was able to drive to Savannah with Ken to pick them up at the airport. That is the furthest she has driven so far. She was tired after a day of treatment, lunch out and the drive. Pam was feeling well enough to spend about an hour with her family at the beach on Saturday. She also enjoyed a dip in the pool with Danielle. I know Ken and Pam thoroughly enjoyed their time with their family. Next Monday, June 29th, will be the last radiation treatment. Pam will see the internal oncologist on Monday, August 3rd. The radiology oncologist will order an MRI about a month after treatment ends. The doctors are pleased with Pam's progress. They did say that more exercise and reading will help with her recovery. Due to the heat Ken plans to take her to the mall for walks and to the pool for exercise. The practice of reading will hopefully improve her comprehension. She has already demonstrated that she can call words. Ashley is doing well. Her arm is painful at times. The healing process for this will be long. Hang in there, Ashley! We're praying for you! Keep those prayers going, Team Messick!! God is listening and answering!! We are so thankful!!

sorry I missed the lunch at Dorothy's house(Dots) still have a hard time changing what I called her back in the day. We had a softball tournament. It is never ending some times. Look like a good crowd. She will be going to college in about 9 weeks. Maybe I can make some of the other events. But you know I have to see her play in college. Sunday, June 21, 2009 9:36 PM, EDT Family & Friends, I am excited to remind you that Monday, the 22nd, Pam will begin her 6th and final week of radiation treatments!! With the exception of the side effects of tiredness and fatigue, she has done very well. The doctors are pleased with her response to treatment. She continues to make small improvements each week. We're hoping after this week is over that her stamina and energy level will begin to improve. At the end of this week I'm sure the doctors will give Ken more information about the timetable for further evaluations that will be made. Although we're thrilled to have seen so much improvement in Pam's mental abilities, we're anxious to see the test results. Let's keep those prayers going!

He was the manager of Colonial Storage for twenty years and was a Vietnam War Veteran serving in the United States Army. He graduated from Jordan High School and a member of American Legion Post 35. He was also a member of FOP since 1999 and was a member of Kirkland Memorial Baptist Church. Other than his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine deBrabant. Survivors include his devoted son, Joey deBrabant and loving daughter-in-law, LaRhonda of Columbus, GA, two step-sons, Robert Jackson of Panama City, FL and David Smith (Ellen) of Boulder, CO, two step-daughters, Betty Friend (William) of Columbus, GA and Evelyn Middleton of Columbus, GA, two brothers, August deBrabant, Jr. (Janice) of Midland, GA and Eugene deBrabant (Sue) of Midland, GA, one sister, June Claycomb (Frank) of Ft. Walton, FL, and three grandchildren, Joseph, Joshua, and Stephanie, and also many loving family members and friends. Sunday, June 14, 2009 9:09 PM, EDT Family & Friends, Pam has had another good week. Tomorrow, Monday the 15th, Pam will begin her 5th week of treatment. She feels well, but is experiencing tiredness and fatigue due to the radiation treatments. Ken sees differences in Pam's ability every week. She seems to have more understanding and does express that things are confusing to her. When she observes Ken doing household chores, she tells him that she should be helping. She does do some things like folding laundry and setting the table. Ken encourages her to conserve her energy and explains that there will be plenty of time to help when she feels better. Pam understands that there are some things she cannot do. For example, Ken was explaining to her the reason that she cannot drive. She totally understood his explanation and expressed that she did not want to drive. She realizes her limitations. Ken says her mental ability has improved more than we could have ever imagined. Because of this we can't help but believe that the treatments are working to reduce the tumor. The doctors are pleased with the progress Pam has made. However, we will not know for sure about the effectiveness of her treatment until it is over and more evaluations are made. Again, we are so thankful for the wonderful progress Pam has made! She has come a very long way! As Ken said, "The miracle of prayer is working." Our Pam is a walking miracle and we are so thankful for God's goodness! Keep those prayers going

It is really good to hear from everybody. It has been very busy at the Department of Labor with the new UI issues and of course the NCR recruitment. If you missed the news coverage, DOL had lines of applicants down Veterans Parkway. I am sifting through 2000 applications now for NCR to view. I read as often as I can. Sunday, June 7, 2009 9:55 PM, EDT Family & Friends, Ken and Pam have had a good weekend. Ken's sister, Francis, and her husband, Eddie, came for a visit. Allen flew in also. Francis and Eddie were able to be with Pam while Ken and Allen played a game of golf. I'm sure all enjoyed being together. Pam begins her fourth week of treatment this week, Monday, June 8th. She is halfway through!! Yea!! Ken says that Pam is presently on cruise control, meaning that she is doing well and improving slightly each week. She is able to do more and more for herself as Ken prompts her. She can put on her makeup, clothes and also take a shower without assistance. She seems to be more alert. She continues to be tired from the radiation and takes naps and rests during the day. Her short term memory has not returned. For example, she can enjoy her meals, but afterwards is not able to remember what she ate. Pam is able to understand as Ken explains things to her. For example, he explained to her today that she needed to take her shower so they could go out to eat. She understood and agreed to do that. After Ken explained about the monitor in her room today, she said, "I was wondering about that." However, she is not able or does not ask questions. Pam has improved steadily over the last two weeks. When I say that I want to be sure to make myself clear. Her improvement continues to come in baby steps. Every little accomplishment or sign of improvement is huge to Ken, her family and all of us who love her so much! Two weeks ago Pam needed assistance with everything. Now she can do some things for herself as Ken prompts her. Pam is in no pain and is able to enjoy life. No one knows how much improvement Pam will make. We won't know how effective the treatment has been until it is over and more evaluations are made. But we can rejoice in the progress she has made! Every day is a precious gift! Allen and Wendy's daughter, Ashley, is doing well. Monday, the 8th will be one week from surgery. It will take six weeks before the doctors will know if her arm is healing well and accepting the steel rod in her "bionic arm", as they are calling it. The doctors did not do a bone marrow transplant. The steel rod was put inside the bone. This has been a painful ordeal for Ashley. She has good days and difficult ones. Your continued prayers are appreciated. Thank you so much for each and every prayer you have given for Pam and her family! It is so important for each of us to continue to be faithful! Please continue to remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

Dot, The pictures of the luncheon are so good! Everyone looks incredible. I sure hate that I missed it. We went camping to Wind Creek and attended the picnic our Superintendent gives us every summer. It just happened to fall on the same weekend. Your home looks beautiful. I know everyone had a great time. That was a really nice gesture of you to have something so nice at your home. Sure hope I can attend the next luncheon. Was so sorry to hear about Mr. Screws. He was such a GREAT man, so many good memories. I did attend Mr. Screw's visitation last night and funeral service today. Benny Pate did the service, and did a great job. I did not get to talk to Benny, but did talk to Bill last night. JVHS Class of '66 William Anthony Screws Sr. William Anthony Screws June 16, 1924- June 3, 2009 COLUMBUS, GA— William Anthony ÒBillÓ Screws Sr., 84, of Columbus, GA died at St. Francis Hospital Wednesday, June 3, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2009 in the Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel. Pallbearers will be Matt Leonard, Allen Leonard, Paul E. ÒTigerÓ Griggs, IV, Jake Farr, Bill Avant, Gunars Dzenis and William K. Avant. Entombment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery, Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. this evening, Friday, June 5, 2009 at the funeral home. Mr. Screws was born June 16, 1924 in Columbus, GA son of the late Charlie Frank Screws and Willie Maude McGregor Screws. Mr. Screws married Angelyn Allen in February of 1945. He then answered the call to serve his country during WWII, joining the Army Air Corp. Mr. Screws was a graduate Jordan High School, and he earned a Bachelors of Arts from Troy University, a Masters of Education from Mercer and a Specialist Degree from Auburn University. His influence in the Field of Education spanned 51 years, but he will always be remembered as an icon of Jordan High School where he served as Assistant Principal for nine years and as Principal for 23 years. Mr. Screws was also active in the community coaching for 17 years, serving as a Representative on the Georgia High School Association for several years, serving in Rotary and playing on the Seniors Softball Team. Mr. Screws never met a stranger and often met people, whom he helped to mold during their youth under his leadership, almost everywhere he went. We, however, will remember him as ÒPapaÓ and for his love and devotion to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Thursday, Jun. 04, 2009 Former Jordan High principal Bill Screws To Elaine Vann, Bill Screws was larger than life. "When he stood in the middle of the hall, you just knew all was well," she said of the former Jordan High principal who died Tuesday, just two weeks short of his 85th birthday. A 1942 Jordan High graduate, Screws was principal at Jordan for 23 years, retiring in 1996. He was assistant principal there for nine years before that Vann worked as a teacher at the school while Screws was principal. "He always supported the teachers," she said. "He knew his way around the school district and could get things for Jordan that I don't believe anyone else could have. He was Jordan High to me." Screws served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a bombardier on a B-29 aircraft. He graduated from Troy State University, a school that gave him an athletic scholarship. He had been a catcher on the Jordan High baseball team and center on the football team. After graduation from Troy, he coached at five high schools in Georgia and Alabama, including Baker High in Columbus. In 1964, he returned to Jordan in an administrative post rather than the football coaching job he had always wanted. "He was as dedicated a school man as we have ever had," said Jim Buntin, a Jordan High graduate who was Muscogee County School District superintendent when Screws retired. "He loved everything about Jordan and fought for it." But it was more than dedication to Jordan that impressed Buntin. "He was a good man, just a fine gentleman." Buntin recalled that for many years Screws was the district's representative to the Georgia High School Association and did a lot for all of the city's athletic teams in that position. Former Jordan basketball coach Billy Tinker called Screws an "all right fellow." "He was tough on the kids though I thought his bark was worse than his bite. He wouldn't let people get away with stuff. I know this: He was awfully good for Jordan." Even as he got older, Screws kept competing in sports. In 1980, he was a member of a 55-and-older softball team, the Columbus Stars, that went to Las Vegas and brought home a national championship. "He wasn't as gung-ho about golf as he was other sports," said Butch Jones, a golfing partner. "Still, he just hated to make a bad shot. He was a great competitor." Do the right thing Jones was a student at Jordan when Screws was an assistant principal and then later worked under him as a softball coach, coming to the school in 1986. They became close friends. "Bill was a principal you could enjoy working for," he said. "If you did things the right way, he left you alone. If you didn't, though, he could be a real thorn in your side. He would listen to your problems, even those that had nothing to do with school." Those who followed his lead were successful. At the time he retired, it was reported that five members from his first staff were principals in the system. Jones said that through the years some people put Jordan students down because many came from poor economic conditions. "Bill insisted that Jordan students deserved what everyone else got. He made it clear that Jordan students were not second-class people." Screws is survived by his wife, Angelyn, daughter Peggy and son William Jr. In a Ledger-Enquirer story noting his retirement in 1996, Screws said, "If any of my teachers had said I'd be a school teacher, I would have said they had rocks in their head. If they had said I'd be principal of Jordan I'd have said they absolutely had rocks in their head."

Monday, June 1, 2009 3:59 PM, EDT Family & Friends, I am so excited to give you another good report today! Pam has had a good weekend! Ken continues to see improvement each week. She can now put on her own makeup and dress herself. However, she does tire after completing small tasks. Ken says he just can't seem to get her in that kitchen to cook! :-) But then she and I were not cooking before all of this. No sense to start something new at our age. :-) The doctor has explained that the radiation treatments are to blame for her low energy and tiredness. He expects Pam to improve with her energy level and stamina after the treatments end. Pam's ability to communicate has greatly improved. She is better able to express her thoughts. Sunday afternoon Ken stopped in the parking lot at Winn Dixi and turned off the motor. She looked at him and said, "Pops, you're not expecting me to go into the store, are you?" He said, "I thought you might want to." She said, "No, I don't want to." She did not have the energy to walk that much. Ken left the air conditioner running for her to stay in the car for a few minutes. Awesome! Then this morning as Ken backed out of the driveway Pam reminded him that he did not close the garage door. Another great sign that Pam is getting better and better. Pam is beginning to enjoy things more and more. Her emotions are returning. She does laugh while watching her favorite TV programs. She does have some signs of confusion at times, but that is getting better. This week a highly recommended house keeper will begin coming to the house on Monday and Tuesday mornings to stay with Pam as Ken goes to work at his office. This will be a good break for Ken to be away for a few hours. Ken will be home in time for Pam's afternoon radiation appointments on those days as well. As you can see, all of our prayers continue to be so important in Pam's recovery. Thank you for being faithful. Allen and Wendy's daughter, Ashley, is now in recovery after surgery today. The doctor said that everything went well. The doctor was not able to put plates in her arm as there was not enough good bone there. He did insert a rod inside the bone and did a bone graft. The incision reaches from below her shoulder across her bicept to inside area of her arm above her elbow. The doctor does not believe it is malignant, but will not know 100% sure until Thursday after the pathology report returns. If she does well, Ashley will be able to go home tomorrow afternoon. Let's all continue to pray for Ashley's recovery. We are so thankful for the good report from Pam and Ashley. I will keep you updated as I hear more.

I just want to say thank you to all those that were able to attend the JVHS lunch/bar-b-que at our house on Saturday, and to those that couldn't make it, we missed you. I had a great time.I think everyone enjoyed looking at the scrap books that I have done. We laughed all afternoon at Mike Hodge. Also, thanks to Jack for bringing his banjo and doing a little picking for us. You owe me Rocky Top!Thank you David for making pictures. Can't wait till they're up. Thursday, May 28, 2009 5:07 PM, EDT Family & Friends, I have good news to report from Pam today! We are so excited that Ken is seeing more progress with her mental abilities every day! Here are a few examples: Yesterday Ken and Pam were sitting at the beach. They had been there a while when Ken asked Pam if she was ready to go home. She replied "no". Her usual response due to her tiredness is "yes". She was definitely enjoying being by the ocean. I think he had to coax her to leave. Fantastic! When they were driving home from the doctor today, Pam said, "What are you doing?" He questioned her about what she meant. She said something to the effect that he was going the wrong way home. Then he remembered that he was driving in the left lane a little longer than usual. This is something Pam in the past would correct him about as she has been concerned about a collision in that lane. Ken moved into the right lane and asked her if she was trying to tell him to move into the right lane. She replied, "yes". She knew what she wanted to say, but could not find the right words. In the recent past she would not have cared. Progress! Then, this afternoon they were sitting on the porch and out of the blue Pam asked Ken to "move the rocking chair away from the wall". A complete, long sentence! Not an answer to a question. More progress! Pam is also beginning to laugh at some of her favorite TV programs. Her emotions are beginning to resurface. Yea! The doctor explained to Ken that he is optimistic about the way Pam is responding to treatment. The doctor cannot commit to results at this point, but he does expect that Pam will have good results from her treatment. He explained that there is a good grade 3 and a bad grade 3 and that Pam's tumor is a good grade 3. We are very encouraged with Pam's progress at this point. We are thrilled at the doctor's report! But we all must remember that it will be after her treatment is completed before another concrete evaluation can be made. I have another prayer request from the Messick family. Allen and Wendy's daughter, Ashley, 21 years old (I think), broke her arm above her elbow last Sunday while visiting in Chicago. She did seek emergency treatment there. Due to Monday being a holiday she was not able to see a doctor in Louisville until Tuesday. After x-rays it was determined that there is a cyst in Ashley's arm that stretches from her shoulder to her elbow. The cyst has caused the bone marrow in that bone to be non-existent. The doctors say that this condition is very rare and 99% of the time it is non-malignant. Monday, the 1st, Ashley will have surgery. The doctors will first send a biopsy to the lab to be absolutely sure that it is not malignant. Then they will put a metal plate in her arm. After that they will put donor bone marrow into the bone. She will be in the hospital about 3 days. So today we do have praise for the wonderful recovery Pam is making!! Thank you, Lord! A definite answer to many prayers! And we also have concern for Ashley. I know you will want to pray for Ashley's surgery and recovery as well as for her family. I cannot even imagine how painful this must be!! Sunday, May 24, 2009 11:08 AM, EDT I wanted to give everyone a little update. Allen, Danielle & I are visiting with "Nana & Pops" (Pam & Ken) this weekend. On Saturday, Ken had asked me to show him how to do Pam's make-up. Pam has bags & drawers FULL of every kind of make-up you can imagine and he just had no idea of where to begin. Allen & I got her vanity oraganized and I showed Ken how to put make-up on her beginning with the moisturizer all the way to the eyeliner & mascara. Ken was a very good student and Pam was enjoying the pampering. SHE LOOKED WONDERFUL and said she felt GREAT!! I thought it was so sweet that Ken wanted to know how to fix up Nana. After the facial, I gave Nana a foot & leg massage, she almost fell asleep. After I finished, I asked her if she wanted some water, she said "no", then I asked her if she wanted me to change the channel on the tv, she said "no", then I asked her, "do you want me to leave you alone"?, she said "yes"! Ha, ha, ha, just cracked me up so I left her alone. It's been over cast & rainy conditions since we arrived Friday but RAIN OR SHINE; Allen said he was taking his Dad golfing this weekend. On Sunday morning Allen & Ken got up at 6:30 am & went to play their favorite game of 18 holes! They were excited because this is the first time in a long time they have been able to play golf together and the first time Ken has gotten a little break from his daily routine. While the guys were golfing, Danielle & I made Nana's breakfast (Ham & cheese toasts & CAKE!!) After a rest to let the food settle, we did Nana's toes, watched some TV and ate some watermelon. We are enjoying our time this weekend with them. Wendy Messick

Monday, May 25, 2009 5:42 PM, EDT Family & Friends, Pam is feeling well today and is not in any pain. She and Ken both enjoyed their visit this weekend with Allen, Wendy and Danielle. Wendy has written an account of their visit in the Guestbook section for Sunday, the 24th. Please visit that section for an up to date report of their weekend. Thank you, Wendy! I know Nana enjoyed her "spa" treatment with her sweet family! We're so glad Allen and Ken were able to get in a game of golf. Ken has not left Pam's side since the beginning. Thank you, Allen, for taking care of Dad as I know you and Chris do every day! Pam will resume her second week of radiation/chemo treatments again Tuesday, the 26th. At its very heart, the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day has everything to do with honoring the living and the dead. Both observances are intended to honor military personnel, but Veterans Day pays homage to all Americans who have worn the nation’s military uniforms, both living and dead, while Memorial Day is a day to remember all U.S. military personnel who died in wars or other military actions. Called Decoration Day after the Civil War, Memorial Day was observed initially by placing flowers on the graves of those killed in that national conflict in the 1860s. Until 1971 it was officially observed every year on May 30 but changed to the last Monday in May under the National Holiday Act. On Memorial Day, the American flag is flown at half-staff until noon and then raised to full staff. Veterans Day, originally named Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918, became a national holiday in 1938 and was officially called by its present name in 1954 to honor World War II and Korean War veterans. A wreath is placed annually at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery to show respect for veterans who died in war. The greatest honor we can bestow on the dead today is in the remembering of what they did for us to keep us free. We must teach our young citizens to respect America’s values and instill in them the true significance of Memorial Day. To those who wear the uniform of our country with pride today, and for those of you who wore it in days past, these few words are meant for you. You gave of yourself, to protect and keep that life which you had learned and begun to love. Some of you came home again while others gave their lives and now live in our tears and memories. Freedom is not free, as they have proven with their blood. Thank you, veterans! We will never forget what you did. In fact, it is our debt and our duty. Because they died, we may live.

Psalms 145:3 says, "Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise. His greatness no one can fathom." We certainly don't understand the depth of His love and grace, but we know we have been touched by His hand!! When this journey began 8 months ago, someone told us that we would look back and see God's handiwork throughout the trip. How true!! Early on, it seemed like such a big undertaking and a bit frightening. Thankfully, we didn't have to make the journey alone! First of all, God was right there! Thank you, Heavenly Father, for your presence, your grace and your healing power!!! To my wonderful wife, Susan, who always had a positive word for me and who never stopped believing for a miracle, I love you so very much! To all of our family who cried, prayed and believed and have never given up, I love you all so very much! The family that made six trips to Houston to provide moral support (Jeff drove most of the time), the family who sacrificed their own lives, families and jobs (Patrick & Tiffany being separated so much during their first year of marriage; Tami being away from her children during such a critical time in their lives; grandkids who did without moms & dads for so long). God has brought such a special bond to our relationship for which I am so thankful! Tricia, many positive comments have been made about the jounal entries that have carried special meanings to so many people. You took CaringBridge to a new level with your scriptures and words of encouragement. The daily updates meant more than you'll ever know!! Thanks so much! For all of our friends and acquaintances and "extended family" who prayed, called, sent cards, e-mailed or sent messages and followed the journey via the CaringBridge website, we can never say "thank you" enough! Your words of encouragement boosted our spirits when we were down and ministered to us when we needed it most!! A special "thanks" to our Methodist Hospital "family" for all you've done to support us and to work with us. All of the hospital staffs, doctors & nurses have been the best!! What a great organization!! To the greatest church family anyone could ever hope for...there is no way we could have made it without your support, love and prayers. Thanks Pastor Dwight & Sister Judy and the congregation of Grace Fellowship and all of the churches who had us on their prayer lists. Pastor Dwight, having you in Houston the day of surgery was awesome!! Our Houston medical team was Spirit-formed. We prayed for the right care team to be brought together and to make the right decisions about my care plan and to execute it to perfection. They did a marvelous job!! Our "hotel" family at White Lodging and the Marriott at the Galleria (Houston) made our visits so comfortable. The friendships we formed will never be forgotten! A special "thank you" to my brother, EG, who handled all of the arrangements. I can never thank you enough for all you & Teddy have done! You all remain in our prayers! I encourage all of you to continue wearing your "TEAM BUBBA" bracelets as a reminder to keep those prayers going up!! Support your local Relay For Life programs and join in the fight against cancer. We got good results today, just like we were believing for and we give God all of the glory. We cannot, CANNOT thank everyone enough for your many prayers, thoughts, phone calls and words of encouragement to us and left in the guestbook. These last 8 months have been a journey of faith and restoration, both physically and spiritually. We know that God will use it for His good and are thankful that we have been blessed to be a part of that. For those of you who have never witnessed a miracle, you just have. I invite everyone to google "sarcomatoid" and read the grim statistics that we faced when we first heard that terrible diagnosis. But our faith doesn't lie in statistics or numbers, our faith lies in Jesus Christ--and He has proven himself faithful. Please don't think of us as one of "the lucky ones"--there is no luck involved. We simply believe Dad's work just isn't done here on earth and all of this has happened for a reason--to bring glory to the Kingdom. This is a bittersweet entry for me--it will be my last one. I have been in touch with all of you every night for the past 8 months, and I will truely miss you. But praise the Lord, this part of the journey is over. Dad will leave one final entry tomorrow night, so be sure you check in for that. God bless each and everyone of you for your friendship and faithfulness to our entire family. Tuesday, May 19, 2009 3:22 PM, EDT Family & Friends, I would like to give you a quick update on Pam progress from today's report from Ken. Today Pam received her second radiation treatment. She also received her first chemo medication. She will receive radiation and chemo for the next 6 weeks. After that time is complete, the doctors will wait for 2-3 weeks before doing more tests to determine if and how the medicine may have helped. After that evaluation is made, the doctors will decide the next step. So it will be a while before we have any concrete information as to Pam's condition. The final pathology report from Houston has not come in. Pam has been on heavy doses of steroids since her diagnosis. The doctors have decided to slowly wean her off of these steroids. Each week they will cut the steroid dosage down by fourths until she is completely off. Several people have asked me questions as to the details of how Pam is, what she can do, what she knows, etc. As carefully as I know how, without giving anyone a false picture, I'm going to try to give you a better description. Pam is happy. She recognizes her family and neighbors/friends and sometimes can call their names. She feels well. She has a good appetite and enjoys her favorite foods. She is able to go into her favorite small restaurant with Ken. Ken has to coach her on how to eat her favorite fried shrimp. She is not in any pain. She is able to take very short walks outside with Ken. She has to have care 24/7. Her short term memory is not there. Since surgery she has made gradual improvements, by that I mean baby steps. She can answer Ken's questions, she can speak short sentences. She can tell Ken if she has a headache or is dizzy, etc. She seems to listen with more emotion, but her emotional understanding does not last but a few seconds. In other words she is not capable of worrying or being sad. Pam is not capable of understanding that she has a malignant brain tumor. She does not ask questions about her treatment. Pam is not capable of having a conversation about her illness. Ken does not try to discuss her illness with her as he does not want her to be upset in any way in whatever degree she might understand. She is just not capable of any understanding about her illness. If there is a plus side to all of this...this is it. Even though her progress has been in very small strides, all of us who love her are ecstatic at any small degree of improvement. In our eyes a small step is a big step and a direct answer to prayer. We want as much of our Pam back as we can get. All of us who have followed her illness from the beginning realize that she is a walking miracle. She is by no means ready for the mall, but we'll take her with whatever steps she can make. Of course we do not know how her treatment will further affect her mentally or physically. Time will tell. Ken has been her most faithful nurse. He does everything he can think of to make her happy and to help her improve mentally and physically. We love you Ken and are so thankful for you!! I hope I have been able to give you a better picture of what is going on. I try very hard to give you an accurate account as Ken shares with me. We are so thankful for Pam's continued improvement. I have made arrangements with Country's to come out and cater the bar-b-que. We are now up to 26. I have ordered extra, so if someone does not know until the last minute if they can come, we will have plenty. Just let me know if you need directions. I will email those that have confirmed tomorrow. It looks like the cost will be about $8.00. This does not include the gratuity. Monday, May 18, 2009 11:42 PM, EDT We did travel to Panama City Beach Saturday afternoon with Daune’s favorite Nurse and she really enjoyed herself. We returned Sunday and got some good news today when we found out she weighs 102 lbs now. That means she has gained 3 pounds since last week. The radiation doctor said the large mass continues to shrink and had added 6 more radiation treatments. Her last treatment will be next Wednesday May 27th. Once radiation is over then we will have to wait until her open wound heals so they can start chemotherapy. She is also hoping her colostomy bag can be reversed. Both of these things are possible in August. Please continue to keep Daune in your prayers. Gene

Their flight is at 12 and Dad will have tests tomorrow evening from 5:00 to 8:00. They will meet with the doctor on Wednesday for a post op check and review the results of the tests from tomorrow. We are believing for nothing but a good report. We know and acknowledge the miracle that we have been blessed with and we give God all the glory. We are excited to see how He will use this situation for His good!! How GREAT is our God.

Friday, May 15, 2009 6:58 PM, EDT Friends & Family, Ken just called with an update. The pathology report we have been waiting for from M. D. Anderson is still not in and continues to be inconclusive. They report that the tumor continues to come back between a "2" and a "3". There is no inbetween number and therefore they will continue their study until the conclusion can be decisive. The head Oncologist, Dr. Moran, and the Radiology Oncologist, Dr. Jamieson, have made the decision not to wait any longer to begin radiation. They will treat the tumor as a "3". Pam will have her first radiation treatment next Monday morning at 10:15. She will continue radiation for 5-6 weeks, 5 days a week. After the radiation treatments are complete, they will wait another 6 weeks before doing a brain scan and a reevaluation will be made. Quoting Ken, "This is VERY good news!! We feel our prayers have been answered!! This is very encouraging!!" If you will remember, the neurosurgeon, immediately after surgery, reported that the tumor "looked like" a "4". A "3" is a much better report! Thank you, Lord!! Pam has had problems with dizziness since surgery. Yesterday the doctor gave her a prescription for vertigo to see if it would help. Today Pam has noticed a big difference and told Ken she even felt better after one dose. This has helped with her stability and her alertness after just one day. Awesome! Ken is so alert to anything and everything that will help Pam. Yesterday afternoon Pam and Ken both were very tired after spending all afternoon at the neurosurgeon's office. There was a long wait time due to an emergency. They have not been to an appointment today. However, Pam is always tired by late afternoon every day. Be sure and visit the photo section of this website. I have just added some great family photos and will be adding more. Also be sure to visit the guestbook pages and read granddaughter Ashley's report from last weekend. Thank you, Ashley!! Notes in the guestbook section are great as are cards in the mail. Dad was being recognized with the Distinguished Service Award at the dinner last night and we were all there to see him receive it. The award and us being there was a total surprise to Dad--Joshua is in from California for a few days and was able to be there, too. That was the biggest surprise of the night!! Dad sure was glad to be able to spend time with some of his friends that he hasn't seen since before he got sick. We praise God for the the strength that Dad regains daily!! How GREAT is our God.

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 1:05 PM, EDT Family and Friends, Ken called a few minutes ago to give us an update. This morning Ken spoke with the radiology oncologist who will be in charge of Pam's treatment. He works directly under the head oncologist, Dr. Moran. The pathology report from M.D. Anderson in Houston has still not come in. The tumor is very difficult to analyze. Because this is taking so long the doctor felt that Ken needed to hear a more complete explanation. The grade (number) assigned to the tumor is most important. The lower the grade the better the prognosis. Each number would mean a great deal of difference in Pam's prognosis. The doctor explained that the local pathology report has graded the tumor a #2. However, we must know that the grade that will be reported from Houston will be the complete analysis that the doctors will accept as the conclusive report. So today for the first time we have some reason to hope for a better prognosis for Pam. We do not want to give false hope to anyone. Please remember that the Houston report will be the diagnosis that will be the one the doctors will accept. We are cautiously encouraged today. Thank you, Lord! It's a great feeling!! Knowing this information can help all of us better direct our prayers. Thank all of you for your faithfulness to pray for Pam and the whole Messick family. All of your expressions of love and support are invaluable. I will continue to keep you updated as soon as I receive information from Ken.

HI EVERYONE, I DON'T POST OFTEN, BUT I HAVE BEEN CHECKING IN OFTEN. HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT EVERYONE'S SICKNESSES AND I AM SO SORRY TO HEAR IT. HOW WELL I KNOW HOW MUCH OF A STRAIN AND CONCERN IT CAN BE. MY BROTHER, RANDY COOK, WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BRAIN CANCER BACK IN SEPTEMBER. HAD SURGERY, AND CHEMO BUT IT CAME BACK. UNFORTUNATELY, IT IS THE INCURABLE KIND. HE IS STILL DOING TREATMENTS TWICE A MONTH, BUT HE IS A TROOPER AND TRIES NOT TO LET US KNOW HOW BAD HE FEELS. HE LIVES IN KENTUCKY, SO I DON'T SEE HIM OFTEN. THE MRI IN APRIL SHOWED IT HAD SHRUNK SOME. THEY WILL CONTINUE TREATMENT AS LONG AS IT IS DOING GOOD. IT WILL EXPAND HIS LIFE AT LEAST MAYBE 2-3YRS. SORRY FOR SUCH A LONG COMMENT, BUT I WANTED TO GET HIM ON EVERYONE'S PRAYER LIST.

Monday, May 11, 2009 11:40 PM, EDT Great news on Daune! She has gained 2 more pounds and weighs 99lbs today. She is on her second round of radiation now and the doctor told us today he will test her again Thursday or Friday and look at the large mass again this weekend and see where we need to go from here. Daune has had an amazing attitude the last few weeks and hardly cries anymore. Since the doctor told her the large mass had shrank 75% she has reached a new attitude level and wants to do more things. One of her goals has been to go to Panama City Beach when she felt better. Some of you know Daune and I met at the beach when we were 18. Some of our friends are having a get together this weekend and she wants to go if only for a few hours. If she feels good Saturday, we are going. We are taking one of our hired Nursing Assistance plus Hospice in Panama City Beach has been notified in case we have an emergency. We appreciate all the emails, cards and your thoughts and prayers. Gene

The doctor explained that the biopsy report that they have been waiting on from Houston has not yet returned. Sometimes the tissue is very difficult to analyze and it takes more time. The doctors will not prescribe treatment until all the results are in and they are satisfied with the report. At this time the results are not conclusive. If you will remember, the neurosurgeon reported that the tumor was very unusual and that she had never seen one quite like it. Pam did not receive any radiation today. She did receive an xray and other preliminary tests that will be necessary before radiation can begin. Pam continues to make gradual improvements daily. More of her personality is returning. The doctors say this is a result of the steroids working to shrink the swelling in the brain, not the tumor. Great news! This morning she even fussed at Ken for biting his nails! This was one time he loved hearing it. :-) You go girl!! Yesterday afternoon Ken and Pam took a very short walk down the street past the next house and back. Ken is constantly thinking of ways to help her regain her strength every day. After the doctor's appointment today Pam agreed that she might like to have lunch at her favorite small fish restaurant in Brunswick. She was able to enjoy her shrimp and baked potato as Ken peeled the shrimp for her. On their way home after a big day out, Ken and Pam both got sleepy driving home in the afternoon sun. This afternoon Hospice will visit and Ken will run some errands. I encouraged Ken to rest when Pam rests. This has been a big day with a doctor's appointment and lunch out in a restaurant. I am so thankful, as I know you are, to know that Pam is progressing nicely. She is not in any pain. Thank you, Lord! Ken, Allen, Wendy, Chris, and Heidi want me to thank all of you for all you are have done and are doing. Every card, gift, meal, journal notes, and other expressions of love and support are greatly appreciated. It is so difficult for the children as they are out of state. Most of all we need to give thanks for Pam's wonderful progress and continue our prayers for her, for Ken and the children and grandchildren. A word to Team Messick...So far we're playing well, we have a lot of innings left to play, stay focused, keep those prayers and other support rollin'. Remember...we pray to win and we never give up!

Friday, May 8, 2009 9:11 PM, CDT Pam is about the same today. She spent the day resting. Allen, Wendy, Ashley and Danielle arrived tonight for the weekend. I believe Pam was already asleep for the night when they arrived. I know she will be so happy to see them Saturday morning. This will be a special weekend for Ken and Pam to have Allen and his family visiting. I know they will enjoy being able to spend time together. He looks stronger every time I see him. God is just so awesome. Mom had two different tests done yesterday--we know that one of them came back normal. We are still waiting on results from the biopsy. Journal Wednesday, May 6, 2009 7:33 PM, CDT I am happy to report that Pam has had another good day! She was a little more alert when she woke up this morning. For a while Pam and Ken were able to enjoy the beautiful morning on their porch. They enjoyed delicious cake that a neighbor had brought, one of Pam's favorites. One of their friends stopped by to check on them. Thank you for doing that! Ken and Pam enjoyed their Chick-Fil-A lunch down by the ocean. I can't imagine a better place to have our favorite chicken! Maybe as I'm enjoying my sandwich in the car in the parking lot in Atlanta, I can visualize the ocean. Well...maybe not... :-) This afternoon a pastor from Hospice visited for a while. An aide from Hospice also came to remove Pam's acrylic nails. The aide was complaining about how bad the nail job was. It took her a while. A couple of friends were watching and kept encouraging the aide to hurry up and finish. They could tell Pam was tired. While all of this was going on, Ken went to pick up fried shrimp for dinner, another of Pam's favorite foods. Ken is spoilin' her rotten!! Thank you Ken!! Keep it up! After all of this activity, Pam said she was "very tired". I'm sure She turned in early tonight. A milestone today was that Pam was able to say her name when Ken asked. She also told Ken his name was "Ken Messick". Awesome!! The biopsy report from Houston has not returned as yet. Ken expects radiation to begin on Monday. We are so thankful for every little improvement Pam is making daily. With Ken being the greatest nurse, it's no wonder! We all wish we could be there helping you with the spoilin', Ken. You're doing a fantastic job! Thank you. A word to Team Messick...keep up your workouts and continue to stay on task. You're doing a great job and the scoreboard shows it!

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 3:19 PM, CDT Ken reports that Pam is about the same today. She seems to be content and is eating well. A neighbor friend stayed with Pam a while this morning while Ken ran a few errands. Ken brought back lunch for them: Pam's favorite chicken strips and a chocolate dessert from Barbara Jean's. Yum! Pam and her friend enjoyed their special lunch. Thank you, Ken! Pam continues to have a short attention span. She can answer "yes" or "no". Sometimes she speaks other short sentences. Her emotions are a little flat. She does laugh once in a while or maybe tear up on rare occasions, but those emotions are fleeting. Ken continues to do a fantastic job of caring for Pam. He is thinking of her every need and doing everything possible to make her comfortable and bring her happiness, like her delicious lunch. He's on call 24/7. We love and appreciate you, Ken!! Cards are a wonderful way to show Pam and Ken your love and that you are thinking about them. Monday, May 4, 2009 1:48 PM, CDT This morning Ken took Pam for her consultation visit to the doctor who will be in charge of the radiation treatments. She was fitted for the mask that is necessary for treatment. The doctor is waiting for a biopsy report from Houston before radiation can begin. Ken thinks this may be Thursday or maybe Monday. After the doctor's visit, Ken asked Pam if she would like to go by Chick-Fil-A to get her favorite chicken minis and then go sit by the ocean. She said, "yes". When asked after a pause, she was also able to tell Ken that she wanted, "diet coke". That was progress! Ken says that she is gradually getting stronger. She is better able to get in and out of bed and is walking better. She is able to feed herself, with the TV off. The TV distracts her. She showed that she was excited to see her friend Joanie. Progress! Ken wants me to express that he is not trying to keep folks away. However, his main focus is to get her to radiation to help her improve so that she can see everybody and enjoy all her family and friends. This is an update from one of Ken and Pam's friends: Friends, I spoke with Ken a few minutes ago. He expects to take Pam home in a couple of hours. A nurse from home hospice care will come at 5:00 to evaluate Pam to see what her needs will be. This is a program that will help while the patient is still receiving treatment. They will not be there 24 hours, but will come as needed. The doctor is optimistic that we will get more of Pam back. She will begin radiation soon. The doctor also said that Pam understands everything said in her presence, but cannot communicate back. After this first round of radiation there is another possible type of radiation they might use. According to Ken the doctors are more direct and give probabilities with statistics. Hospice is much more optimistic. Ken feels that we are somewhere in between.

This is an email from one of Ken and Pam's friends: Friends, Last night Ken left a message on my phone about 8:00 that Pam was resting nicely, was about the same as we had talked earlier and was tired. The boys had her up walking some around the room. Pam was "watching" TV. Ken sounded so relieved! The boys went home to sleep last night. Ken stayed with Pam in her private room. Ken just called to report that more doctors would be in today to help with the next steps. Dr. Moran, an oncologist, I think, was more optimistic than the neurosurgeon. He explained to Ken that this is like a ball game. We know we won't make it to the World Series, but we want to get to the playoffs. There may be rain delays and lighting along the way and each inning will be different. Like in a ball game innings can change the game quickly. Pam speaks one or two words. She gets tired with too much talking. Some of her close friends have been in to see her. Ken is planning to take Pam home this afternoon. Dr. Moran is helping Ken with investigating in-home hospice care. I'm optimistic that we have some time. Cards would be great for Ken to read to her periodically. It would help Ken too! Pam would be amazed at how many loving friends she has!! I pray she will have some understanding of this. You are all wonderful! Thank you again for your continued prayers for all the family. The first inning has been rough, we have a tough team to beat, but we will never give up!!

Peek-a-Boo ... Here I am Sharon, thanks for asking about me. I hope everyone in Columbus is doing good. I have been on a tour of Alabama searching for a paycheck. I found a few paydays in Cullman, but that pot of gold ran out. So like a gypsy, now I travel from town to town "searching, seaching for my baby", and a nice paycheck too. Actually, I am in beautiful Fairhope, Alabama enjoying the sweet life and beautiful flowers here. Also, I want to say hi to my good buddy Mike and my friend Dot on da spot, and hello Mable I didn't forget cha. And to anybody else who is out there that I know, hello strangers. I almost made it to Decatur, Alabama and Columbus to see all you fine people. I was close in Cullman, Alabama. Now I know what Rickey Nelson meant when he sang "I'm a Traveling Man". Dear Classmates: On Friday, May 15th, you are invited to the 9th annual Doug Taylor Scholarship Awards. The JVHS Senior Awards begin at 9:30 AM in the auditorium. This year is very special in that the Doug Taylor Scholarship Awards for $1000.00 to each of four senior students will be in honor and memory of Mr. James (Jimmie) Entrekin who passed away on November 24, 2008. As you may remember, Mr. Entrekin graduated from JVHS in 1943. He taught sheet metal, welding and machine shops at Jordan for many years and was later the Vocational Supervisor. He was faculty advisor and assisted with many Jordan student clubs. He retired from Jordan in 1981. His passion and desire before he passed away was to continue to help Jordan students with their education. He along with his family requested that memorial contributions be made to the Doug Taylor Scholarship Fund. Over $4000.00 has been contributed to the Scholarship Fund in Mr. Entrekin's memory. Plans are to have Mrs. Edith Entrekin, his wife, Janie Entrekin Brooks, his daughter and other family members present to assist with the presentations. Monday, April 27, 2009 10:42 PM, EDT Daune weighed 96 lbs today so she has gained 2 lbs since last week. Maybe we are headed in the right direction. She has 6 more radiation treatments left but, the doctor said he was going to run his test this week and see if she needed more days now or take a break. She has her good days and bad but I would have to say her attitude is good most of the time. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

I think he is still asleep. We are so encouraged by the progress that he has made just in the last couple of days. We never doubted that God was still in control--we were waiting on his timing and He has proven Himself faithful yet again!! How GREAT is our God.

Hi Sharon sorry I missed the dance as I am still unable to travel. I was looking forward to seeing you again and many others. Guess I'll have to wait until the next one. I'm up and around and doing remarkably well. I'm able to get out for short trips(Walmart and the pharmacy) to see friends and that makes recovery much better. The pain level is down to about a 1 on a scale of 10. I should be back to normal by the end of May. Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and kindness.

It wore him out and he went straight home and took a nap, but he was so glad to be able to go. This afternoon, we got him out and went to the park with Sophie (the granddog). So, he has had a pretty busy day--much more than he has done for the past 6 week. We are thankful that he is finally starting to feel a little stronger!! How GREAT is our God.

There are many who don't appreciate the sentiment shown here. Until all Americans feel this way, we will have a struggle to maintain our American freedoms which these young boys (and those before them who did not hesitate to step up to the plate as they say) are dedicated to defending. ________________________________ The Sack Lunches I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. "I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap", I thought. Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation. "Where are you headed?" I asked the soldier seated nearest to me. "Petawawa. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan." After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time. As I reached for my wallet, I overheard soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. "No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks. I'll wait till we get to base." His friend agreed. I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. "Take a lunch to all those soldiers." She grabbed my arms and squeeze tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. "My son was a soldier in Iraq ; it's almost like you are doing it for him." Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, "Which do you like best - beef or chicken?" "Chicken," I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class. " This is your thanks." After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. "I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this." He handed me twenty-five dollars. Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand, and said, "I want to shake your hand." Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, " I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot." I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers. Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm. When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars! Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. "It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You." Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers. As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little... A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "United States of America " for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is Honor and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

City nears end of tornado cleanup Dinglewood Park last to be cleared By Ben Wright - benw@ledger-enquirer.com -- Robin Trimarchi rtrimarchi@ledger-enquirer.com City public service crews clear downed trees from Dinglewood Park on 13th Street Friday. The park and several nearby homes were hit by a tornado Sunday, April 19. 04/24/09 Dinglewood Park is the last area the city is clearing after a tornado roared down 13th Street in Columbus on Sunday. “Everything is covered right now other than this park area,” said Barry Brown, a supervisor with the Urban Forestry Division of the Columbus Consolidated Government. Chain saws and heavy equipment were busy Friday as city work crews and inmates from the Muscogee County Prison worked to clear more than 20 of the 60 trees that were damaged by a tornado with sustained winds of 105 mph. Most of the damage in Columbus was along 13th Street, Lakebottom Park, Wynnton Road and Midtown. Citywide, officials estimate more than 150 fallen trees and 100 homes or businesses damaged. Dinglewood is a passive park off 13th Street and Warren Williams Road. It is filled mostly with massive hardwoods and a few pines. Brown said crews were struggling to clear the huge logs from the park which slopes uphill from the streets. The recent rains made it difficult to move tractors around. “Even the loaders are slipping and sliding and stuff,” said Brown, taking a break from sharpening a chainsaw. “It’s making it hard for us to get it down here and get it loaded up.” With the wet terrain, Brown said crews were cutting trees into smaller pieces to move the debris. “We are not trying to tear up the landscaped area,” he said. “We are trying to do the best we can to keep the park intact.” Brown hopes to get the fallen trees cleared next week. “We will get it all cut up and gone by the middle of next week,” he said. The trees and debris are loaded onto trucks and hauled to the inert landfill at Granite Bluff off River Road. There, the wood is chipped into mulch for landscaping. Throughout the city, no streets remain closed from the tornado damage, Brown said. Warren Williams Road was temporarily closed Friday while crews loaded trucks with fallen trees, but it was reopened later in the afternoon. Damage estimates are not complete from the storm. Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine was in Columbus Tuesday surveying damage, said Glenn Allen, a spokesman. The tornado caused an estimated $6 million in damage to homes and vehicles. No estimate was available yet on commercial damage, he said.

Updated: River Road water tank collapses over night By CHUCK WILLIAMS - chwilliams@ledger-enquirer.com -- The largest water tank in Muscogee County collapsed early Saturday morning sending about 6 million gallons of water onto J.R. Allen Parkway near River Road. The open-top steel tank was located on a hill at the Columbus Water Works treatment facility between River Road and J.R. Allen. It failed shortly before 4 a.m. The collapse has not disrupted the city’s water supply, Water Works President Bob Tant said Saturday morning as he surveyed the damage. The eastbound lane of J.R. Allen was closed from Second Avenue to Bradley Park. Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services and Columbus Police responded. There was a search and rescue operation on the river shortly before dawn by Columbus Fire and EMS, Columbus Police Lt. Jennifer Dunford said. A vacant vehicle with North Carolina license plates was found near the city marina off River Road. Police were still trying to figure out who the vehicle belonged to and where the person who owned it was, Dunford said. One motorist drove into the debris on J.R. Allen and was slightly injured, Dunford said. There was debris on J.R. Allen and River Road. Two large metal power poles just north of the tank site were leaning at a 60-degree angle. The poles hold transmission lines that transmit high voltages. When the tank failed, the water rushed off the hill in multiple directions. The bulk of the water went toward J.R. Allen, onto the eastbound lane, then into a storm drain, under the westbound lane and down toward the city marina. Some of the water went onto Moss Drive, where some homes appeared to suffer minor water damage. Water also went down the Water Works drive off River Road. It damaged landscaping and fencing on the Water Works property. The metal tank, which was a long line of crumpled steel, was at the bottom of the hill just off J.R. Allen. The tank was constructed in 1965 and regularly inspected, Tant said. “This is a very unusual and strange situation,” Tant said. Tant and top Water Works officials were preplexed Saturday morning as they surveyed the damage. “If you had told us to make a list of the top 10, 20 or even 30 disasters that could happen, this would not have made the list,” Tant said. “This is totally unexpected.” There was one Water Works official at the plant when the tank failed. He was not injured, Tant said. The Water Works had to briefly shut down the plant briefly, Tant said. “We have always had the ability to take that tank off line,” Tant said. “We can bypass the tank, but it will make things a little more difficutl for us.” The tank, the only one of its kind in the 12-tank Water Works system, held untreated river water pumped out of Lake Oliver. Where the tank once stood, there was just a concrete pad and a metal flooring on an area that would cover about two Olympic-sized swimming pools. The Water Works has begun an investigation of the failure, Tant said. “There is no pointing in speculating,” Tant said. “We need to find out what happened. We will get people on the site today.”

Armed Forces Day 5/16/2009 Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. The day is to honor Americans actively serving in the five services: the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The day was created in 1949. Other nations, such as Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, have similar celebrations, but at different times of the year. Memorial Day 5/25/2009 Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, because people decorated graves with flowers and flags, Memorial day was also called Poppy Day after World War I. The term "Memorial Day" did not become more common until after World War II. Beginning with the first widely observed Decoration Day in 1868, the holiday was celebrated on May 30 for over 100 years—until 1971, when federal law changed the date to the last Monday in May. Althought Memorial Day was first celebrated to remember those who died in the Civil War, it now honors Americans who died in any war.

They are running tests to see if they can figure out why his blood pressure continues to be low, so hopefully we will be able to get to the bottom of all this very soon. The doctor said he would probably be there for 2 or 3 days. Unfortunately, that means he won't be able to travel with us to see Joshua tomorrow. So, please pray for our safe travel and for Dad's comfort while we are gone.

I know that we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and just will not ever agree on what's right. So let's just end it right now while we can do it on friendly terms. We can smile, shake hands, chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and each go our own way. So here's a model separation agreement. Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by land mass, each taking a portion. That's going to be the difficult part, but I'm sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy. Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate taste. We don't like redistributive taxes so you can have those. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. And since you hate guns and you hate war, we'll take the firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell. But you are going to be responsible for finding a biodiesel vehicle big enough to haul them around. We'll keep the capitalism, the greedy corporations, the pharmaceutical companies; we will keep Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have the homeless, the homeboys, the hippies and illegal aliens. We will keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, the greedy CEOS and all of the rednecks. We'll keep the Bibles and we'll let you have NBC and Hollywood. You can be nice to Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer anybody that threatens us. You can have the peaceniks and the war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we will provide them with security. You won't have to worry about it. We will keep our Judeo-Christian values. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley Maclaine. You can also have the UN, but we will no longer pay the bill. We will keep the SUVs, the pickup trucks and the oversize luxury cars. You can have the compacts, the subcompacts and every Subaru station wagon you can find. You can give everybody healthcare, if you can find any practicing doctors. We will continue to believe that healthcare is a privilege and not a right. We will keep "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and the national anthem, and I am sure you will be happy to substitute in their place "Imagine." I'd like to teach the world to sing "Kumbaya" or "We are the world." We will practice trickle-down economics and you can give trickle-up poverty your best shot.
